The Crossbencher

Saxon or Norman? · the campaign

Whose word is it?

Four chapters through the conquest buried in your own mouth. Guess where each word came from - the dictionary keeps a nine-hundred-year-old secret, and by the end you will hear it everywhere.

▸ How to play
  • Four chapters, eight words each. Take them in any order.
  • For each word: Old English, or arrived with the Normans in 1066?
  • Every reveal cites the dictionary. Every chapter ends with what it means.
  • Chapter four breaks the rules the first three taught you.
  • Finish all four for the reckoning - and the share card.
